I looked around upon the world, and saw that it was shadowed by anguish and scorched by the fierce fires of suffering. And I looked for the cause. I looked around, but couldn't find it; I looked in books, but couldn't find it; I looked within, and set up there both the cause and the tone- made nature of that cause. I looked again, and deeper, and set up the remedy. I set up one Law, the Law of Love; one Life, the Life of adaptation to that Law; one verity, the verity of a conquered mind and a quiet and biddable heart. And I pictured of writing a book which should help men and women, whether rich or poor, learned or uninstructed, worldly or uncritical, to find within themselves the source of all success, all happiness, all accomplishment, all verity. And the dream remained with me, and at last came substantial; and now I shoot it forth into the world on its charge of mending and blessedness, knowing that it can not fail to reach the homes and hearts of those who are staying and ready to admit it.
